Visit Adelaida Cellars’ tasting room. The synergy of unique “terroir”, sustainable agriculture and minimalist winemaking all come together in the ripe, well balanced wines made at Adelaida Cellars. We specialize in estate-grown Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Rhones and serious Cabernet Sauvignon from our Viking Vineyard.

Open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. 5805 Adelaida Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446. 805.239.8980 or 800.676.1232. www.adelaida.com Established in 1981, Adelaida Cellars is a family-owned and operated vineyard. Named after a 19th century settlement in the Santa Lucia mountains the winery lies on the west side of Paso Robles, some 15 miles from the fog shrouded Pacific coast at elevations of 2000 feet.

This dramatic terrain has become synonymous with ancient calcareous soils of limestone and chalk, diurnal temperature changes of 40-50 degrees and inherently low yielding vines with concentrated grape flavors.

The Adelaida Estate features four unique vineyard locations: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the historic microclimate of HMR Vineyard (established in 1964), Reserve quality Cabernet and Syrah from the steep rocky outcropping of the Viking Vineyard, mineral and dry-farmed Zinfandel from Michael’s Vineyard and fruit driven Rhône varietals from Anna’s Vineyard.

Adelaida Cellars offers daily wine tasting, selection of cheese, crackers and spreads, picnic area, the best vineyard tour in Paso Robles offering wine tasting at the source, private reserve tastings as well as numerous events throughout the year.

Our Farming: Biodynamic. Dry Farmed. Head Trained. Steep Hillsides. Organic.

Our Wine: 100% Estate. Unfiltered. Unfined. Native Yeasts. Aged in Amphora. Biodynamic

Our Philosophy: A Love of the Land. A Joy of Life.

AmByth Estate is a Demeter certified Biodynamic farm: an emphasis is placed on the farm as a whole, not just the vineyards. Integration of animals, perennial plants, flowers and trees, water conservation and composting is emphasized. Inputs such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are prohibited. A focus on soil health, the integration of plants and animals and biodiversity demands close observations and participation by the farmer, and we believe this is reflective in the wine, lending to the wine a ‘sense of place’.

AmByth Estate is Paso Robles’ first and only Demeter certified Biodynamic vineyard and winery. The vineyards consist of over 20 acres planted to Rhone varietals, and an additional acre each of Sangiovese and Tempranillo. Interspersed throughout the vineyards are over 650 olive trees, all of Spanish varietals.

AmByth Estate believes in producing 100% estate wine that are made with minimal intervention. We do not use additives to manipulate the fruit that comes from the vineyards. We also strive to produce wine that is lower in alcohol levels, so that we have drinkable wines which create that magical harmony between food and wine.

Visit a working farm: see the compost pile (averaging 50 tons of cow manure), the cows, the chickens roaming the vineyards, the bees and our gardens which supply 85% of our fruit and vegetable consumption. We have installed solar power and are excited the see the meter running backwards! We’d love to show you our little slice of […]

We are a family-owned winery specializing in wines from our sustainably farmed estate Margarita Vineyard on the historic Santa Margarita Ranch.

Estate Margarita Vineyard:

Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles region, nestled into the rugged Santa Lucia Mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The name Ancient Peaks honors the tall peaks surrounding Margarita Vineyard, which were forged by the collision of the coastal plates. Over time, these same geologic forces blessed us with five distinct soil zones—ancient sea bed, sedimentary, shale, volcanic and granitic—that bring natural character and complexity to our wines.

Ancient Peaks Wines:

Our wines have earned 93 points from the Wine Spectator, 92 points from Wine & Spirits, 90 points from the Wine Enthusiast and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and “Steal of The Year” honors from Sunset Magazine, among other accolades. Our main estate wines are Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the Renegade red blend. We also offer limited-edition “White Label” wines at our tasting room, including Malbec, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah and the Oyster Ridge red blend.

Vineyard, Ranch and Canopy Tours:

Experience Ancient Peaks wines from ground to glass as we take you on a gourmet guided tour of our estate Margarita Vineyard on the historic Santa Margarita Ranch.

From remarkable geological features to cutting-edge sustainable winegrowing practices, you will discover the unique sense of place that shapes the wines of Ancient Peaks. Your 90-minute tour will also include a tasting flight of Ancient Peaks wines paired with select fine meats and artisan cheeses.

Located downtown in Paso Robles’ 127-year-old train depot, Anglim’s focus is on Rhone varietals and blends, plus limited-production family favorites including Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Steve Anglim’s winemaking career began innocently enough. Years ago, he and his wife Steffanie started out as home winemakers, “making one ton lots in our garage and taking classes at U.C. Davis,” Anglim remembers. Eventually, the hobby turned into much more than that and the Anglims began sourcing high quality fruit for what would eventually become their family winery. That search led them to Central Coast winegrowers such as Harry Fralich, all of whom told the Anglims that this was the place to be. Anglim backed that up with his own research, and discovered that “there was a core quality that was forming here and just getting better and better.”

As a result, Anglim Winery was established in 2002 with the goal of producing elegant wines from the finest vineyards in California’s Central Coast. Anglim seeks out vineyards in Paso Robles and in Santa Barbara County with unique microclimates that produce fruit of distinction. Because of the label’s small annual production, Anglim does the actual winemaking itself in a shared-use facility in Paso Robles, a situation that suits him just fine. “I want to work with growers,” said Anglim. “and work with passionate people who know their vineyards.” To that end, Anglim strives to combine the best of winemaking history with the best of new world techniques. He uses 100 percent French oak, and manages his wine making approach and new oak percentages to “avoid overextracted, tannic monsters. I want the wines to have a balanced […]

BarrelHouse Brewing Co. is nestled in the rolling hills of San Luis Obispo County on the edge of Paso Robles and in the heart of wine country at  3055 Limestone Way, Paso Robles CA.

As you turn off Ramada Drive and onto Marquita Way, you will meander around a majestic oak tree. This majestic white oak stands in the middle of where the road would have gone, if not for this tree’s historical significance. If you look closely at the trunk of this old oak, you will notice the mark of an equal armed cross carved into its bark. The cross was carved sometime between 1775 and 1776 when Spanish Lt. Colonel Juan Batista de Anza led more than 240 men, women and children on an overland journey from the frontier New Spain to settle in Alta California. During that 1,200 mile journey, the very thirsty Colonel carved the cross to signify the perfect location for a brewery…well, that’s our story at Barrelhouse and we can’t exactly prove it, but we’re sticking to it! Historians believe that Juan Batista de Anza or someone on his team carved the cross to indicate a safe place to camp. We think it makes a sweet logo, too!

After you pass the old oak, make a left on Limestone Way and look for the dragon fly…you can’t miss it. Stop by, grab a brew or two and relax. Enjoy our glorious beer gardens with friends while you listen to the waterfall and experience the central coast the way it was meant to be enjoyed…outside.

In the southern hemisphere the constellation Argo Navis is separated into three star clusters: Vela (The Sails), Puppis (The Stern), and Carina (The Keel). Named for the epic ship Argo and its crew of fifty, the constellation was placed among the stars by the Greek goddess Athena upon completion of the epic quest for the Golden Fleece. The crew, better known as the Argonauts, included Jason, Hercules, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux, triumphed through perils unseen in our modern world and became legends to innumerous generations.

At Carina Cellars we strive to produce wines worthy of being placed among the stars. Our goal is to grow some of the best Rhone grapes available on the Central Coast. Crisp Viogniers full of tropical fruit and spring flowers, dark Syrahs loaded with spice and lush fruit, earthy Mourvedres and bright, fruity Grenaches, we represent the classic character of Paso in our wines. Our unique Rhone blends: Clairvoyant, Sibylline and Syrah7% all strive to embody the traditions of the revered Rhone region, melded with the unique flavors of California’s Central Coast. And our flagship blend, Iconoclast, seeks to defy all conventions with its 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Syrah.

Carina Cellars is the result of an avid wine collector with a dream who meets an accomplished winemaker with a vision. When attorney and businessman David Hardee and winemaker Joey Tensley met in 2002, they were quick to recognize the benefits of combining their passion. With Hardee’s talent for business, Tensley’s talent for wine making, and a shared belief in only the best, Carina Cellars was born.

Working solely with vineyards who share our farming philosophies, Joey and David sought to […]

Each vintage presents a new challenge and Niels is more than willing to constantly and creatively experiment. This on-going research is only one of the many factors that ensures they meet their goal. Niels’ long-time nickname “Beaver,” evolved further when he was working in Italy and his friends soon took to calling him “Il Castoro,” beaver in Italian. The name and the motto stuck. Castoro Cellars’ “dam fine wines” sport a picture of a beaver on each label. Castoro is now a winemaking team effort. The team includes Niels, his mentor Tom Myers, and Mikel Olsten. Together they discuss and decide how they want to handle each variety. “There’s a lot less romance in the every day wine world than appears from the outside,” Niels explains. “The winery isn’t a showplace; we don’t have big stone pillars and art collections, but we have everything we need to make great wine.” Establishing their own winery in San Miguel and being able to produce their wines in one place as opposed to producing different wines […]

Ecluse Wines may not be familiar to people yet BUT stand by! As the home of the S.F. Chronicle’s Sweepstakes winning wine we produce our wonderful limited production, handcrafted, award-winning wines. Ecluse is the small, family owned boutique winery of our own Lock Vineyards where we were already well known for producing some of Paso Robles most sought after grapes and now fabulous wines!

A question almost always asked of us is about our name Ecluse. The explanation is simple – Ecluse is French for the locks on the canals that gently carve their way through the remarkable French wine country – since our last name is Lock the name Ecluse for our wines was born!

Our adventure as a small boutique winery and vineyard began in 1997 when we purchased 30 beautiful acres of gently rolling hillside terrain on the desired Westside of the Paso Robles AVA. Our philosophy from the beginning is that great fruit makes great wine.

We were excited at the prospect of planting a vineyard that could take advantage of our special location, microclimate and exposure to the northeast, the southeast and south. Because the soils in our vineyard are quite varied ranging from calcareous limestone on the hill tops to areas with clay and loam near the bottoms of the gentle hills we were able to take advantage of the subtleties of the soils by choosing the optimum varietals to plant. Thus Lock Vineyard came to life in 1998 with the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Zinfandel. In the past year we have decided to add blending varietals to the vineyard. We are planting very […]

It began inFirestone Walker Brewing Company brewed its first beer in 1996  in a small  facility rented from the Firestone Vineyard estate in Santa Barbara County.  In 2001 owners Adam Firestone and David Walker purchased the SLO Brewing Company located in Paso Robles, CA.

Firestone Walker’s ales are selectively fermented in the Firestone Union oak barrel brewing system. The Firestone Union incorporates 65-gallon, medium and heavy toast American oak barrels.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company continues to grow as the palates of Americans migrate to craft beer. Our brew staff have picked up “Mid Size Brewery of the Year” at the World Beer Cup an unmatched four times.

nocently enough: a couple of brothers-in-law sitting around debating the subject of good and bad beer. Instead, their search for a decent ale led them to brew their own. Given Mr. Firestone’s winemaking bias and Mr. Walker’s complete lack of fermentation experience, they believed 60-gallon oak barrels were the appropriate vehicle in which to create their perfect elixir.

OK, so initial attempts were forgettable. But like so many great ideas, out of that disaster was born a handy invention – the Firestone Union. Based on classic brewing traditions from Burton-Upon Trent, this bizarre and unlikely system of linked barrels has the ability to produce rich and complex ales. In 1996 the accidental duo shelved their endless discussion on better beers and settled for building a world-class brewery that bore their names on California’s Central Coast……the debate was now over.

Rob and Paula Campbell-Taylor, owners and caretakers of Graveyard Vineyards, bought the beautiful hilltop property in 2003 when the vineyard was in its seventh leaf and they set their goals firmly in place to create wines that memories are made of. Paula says, “I want to know that our wine is served at memorable occasions with families and friends and enjoyed with the comfort foods of that occasion. Comfort food and comfort wine is a match made in heaven!”

Rob, born and raised in Bakersfield, California, graduated from Fresno State University as a mechanical engineer. Equipped with a 25-year engineering career and a passion for the wine and grape growing industry, Rob holds the key to the success of the grapes produced from Graveyard Vineyards.

When my father brought me to the Central Coast for weekends of hunting and fishing in the 1960s I was fascinated by how different the climate was over such a short distance. Now years later, I have learned that those hot daytime temperatures followed by cool evenings and chilly nights give the Paso Robles appellation the most remarkable diurnal temperature variation of any wine growing region and wonderfully complex wine grapes.

Rob lived in Bakersfield, then Santa Barbara and for years dreamed of having his own vineyards, until his wish came true when he brought his wife, Paula, to the Central Coast for the weekend and she fell in love with it.

Reminding Paula of the small-town upbringing she had in Indiana, she and Rob packed up their belongings and brought their two small boys out to the countryside. Now their boys walk to school through the rolling hills of vineyards. How romantic […]

Experience the flavor of old California at this historic west side ranch. Our steep hillside vineyards, limestone-rich soils and sustainable farming practices enable us to produce 100% estate-grown wines of the highest quality, showcasing Bordeaux and Rhone Valley varieties and blends.

Halter Ranch dates to the 1880s, when it was part of a 3,000-acre property owned by Paso Robles pioneer Edwin Smith. The beautiful Victorian farmhouse Smith built on the ranch in 1885 remains a westside Paso Robles landmark.

In 2000, Hansjoerg Wyss, a Swiss-born businessman, purchased 1000 acres of the ranch, convinced Paso Robles has the potential to produce wines rivaling the finest from California and the world.

Fervently committed to quality, the last twelve years have been spent developing Halter Ranch’s now 250-acre vineyard, and crafting the first estate wines, renovating the historic buildings, and building a new, state-of-the-art winery and wine cave.

Halter Ranch Vineyard boasts 20 different grape varieties – primarily Bordeaux and Rhone-styles. The vines are planted on steep, south-facing slopes reaching 1,600 feet in elevation and boasting soils rich in limestone, a feature of many of the world’s finest vineyards. High-density plantings, multiple clones and root stocks, and low yields enable us to produce fruit of superb quality. Committed to environmentally responsible grape growing, the vineyard is farmed sustainably, earning the SIP (Sustainability in Practice) Certification.

The Halter Ranch wines – including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Rose, a Rhone Red & White blend (Cotes de Paso) and a Bordeaux blend (Ancestor) are hand crafted by our winemaker, Kevin Sass. Our mission is to transform the superb fruit from our estate vineyard into richly flavored wines with bright acidity and a refreshing […]

Hug Cellars specializes in hand crafting small lots of ultra-premium wine. Winemaker Augie Hug approaches winemaking with a measured hand, allowing each vineyard to express its own virtues. Hug Cellars utilizes grapes from premier, maritime vineyard sources from the Central Coast.

Hug Cellars is a small family owned winery established in 1994 by Augie and Raquel Hug. While becoming a reality in 1994, Hug Cellars started conceptually during the mid 1980’s, while Augie was the chef/owner of a small restaurant located in Northern California. Augie found that the union of food and wine came quite naturally to him, and it was during this time that he developed his love of wines.

A few years later, Raquel and Augie were proprietors of the Central Coast Wine Room, a wine shop and tasting room in Harmony, CA, on the Central Coast of California. It was there, that they were befriended by a couple of visionaries, Mat Garretson, founder of the Viognier Guild, and John Alban, of Alban Vineyards. Soon after their meeting, Mat and John founded the Hospice du Rhone; the largest wine event in the world for fans of Rhone variety wines.

Augie and Raquel became familiar with the wines made on the Central Coast from these (at the time) obscure grape varieties originating from the Rhone Valley, and showcased them in their wine shop and tasting room. Soon the Central Coast Wine Room was well known throughout the country as having an extensive array of impossible to find wines made on the Central Coast from Rhone varieties.

In 1994 under the gracious guidance and mentoring of John Alban, Augie produced 87 cases of “Edna Valley” Syrah […]

J Dusi Wines brings you a family tradition with a new perspective. Janell Dusi is digging up her heritage and roots of her family’s 80 year old Zinfandel vineyard in Paso Robles, California. From this head pruned and dry farmed vineyard, she is creating some old-world style wines that are primarily Zinfandel and Zinfandel blends that carry the essence of that distinct “Dusi Fruit.” Janell has been making wine for friends and family to enjoy since 1996 and started the J Dusi wines label in 2006. And in September 2013 opened her fisrt tasting room on Hwy 46 West. She begin making wine with her grandfather, Dante Dusi, teaching her the basic Italian style in his basement. One unique character that comes through in Janell’s winemaking is that she personally hand picks during harvest, drives the tractors, crushes the fruit and covers every step of the process with a smile. Good work ethic was instilled in Janell at a young age. Today, the 100 acre vineyard operation is still a family affair. Any given day you can drive onto the ranch and see four generations working and playing throughout the vineyard.

Stephan: The Man Behind L’AventureStephan Asseo has been in the wine industry for nearly three decades. After he graduated oenology college in the Burgundy region of France in 1982, the Asseo family purchased their first property, Domaine de Courteillac, on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Later, the family purchased additional properties: Chateau Robin and Chateau Fleur Cardinale (Saint-Emilion Grand Cru). With a unique style, Stephan raised those properties to a level of quality that brought him continuous accolades from the European press, travel guides and the Wine Spectator. Soon, well established wineries like Chateau Guillot Clauzel in Pomerol and Chateau Corbin were asking Stephan to manage their properties as well. When Stephan announced his desire to create a vineyard and winery in America, most of his friends and customers were surprised! Why would he leave an established, comfortable situation in Europe to take a chance in the new world? For Stephan, who wanted to expand his expertise while gaining more freedom in viticulture and vinification, it was the beginning of L’Aventure (the adventure in French). He began searching California for land, including Napa/Sonoma and Santa Barbara counties. It was after this tour that he was most impressed with the quality of the terroir of California wine country’s newest rising star: Paso Robles. Our Terroir: Paso Robles West SideThe site for the vineyard was selected after an extensive study of the area that matched Stephan’s experience as a vigneron. He immediately favored the west side of Paso Robles for its sloping hills and authentic quality terroir. The one hundred twenty seven acre property he chose is comprised of multiple hills of various elevation, complex soils […]

The Elliptical Way of Winemaking

Wine Herd John Munch on Le Cuvier’s vinous principles:

“There is firm empirical evidence to the effect that yeast & other varied wine pathogens die of boredom unless given an interesting environment within which to practice their art. This tautological proposition holds its deepest truth when sun & stone, vine & grape undergo fundamental transmutation into fine liquid elixir via the agency of wild yeast & other similarly feral beasties, rather than via the effete & banal interaction of commercial strains of their distant freeze dried brethren, the latter being so boringly predictable. Thus, at Le Cuvier we have firmly dedicated ourselves to making life as interesting as possible, while leaving the entire process of winemaking in the hands (so to speak) of the wild beasties. Indeed, all human efforts in the effervescent process is evanescent.”

In sum, the deep-hued, opaque, & intense character one experiences from Le Cuvier wines is borne from the practice of wild yeast fermentation, coupled with uncommonly long barrel-aging that allows the wine to develop its complex array of flavors and aromas. Le Cuvier wines spend a minimum of 36 months (3 years) in barrel before bottling, & a select few are reserved for even longer aging, as the winemaker sees fit to his peculiar scheduling regime. Interference with the natural fermentation process is minimal; unnatural additives – sulfites, most notably – are added in minute amounts, & only after the prescribed barrel aging period during which the wines have muscled up their own hardiness & vigor, & only to the extent needed to preserve the wine in bottle. The results are wines of unique […]

They say good fences make good neighbors, but it was a love of wine and winemaking that was the entree between Opolo owners Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols. Their two families have lived side-by-side in Camarillo since 1996. As Nichols remembers, “I knew Rick to say hello to, but that was about it. Then one day, he said to me, “Hey Dave, I just planted 10,000 grapevines!’ ” And so began the evolution of Opolo, one of Paso Robles’ newest labels.

Quinn and Nichols have been neighbors in two counties since 1997 when Nichols bought vineyard property adjoining Quinn’s. Together they now own about 280 acres of vineyards in Paso Robles, about 200 acres on the Eastside and 80 on the Westside. The Westside vineyards are in the Adelaide hills, producing wines such as Pinot Noir and Sangiovese, while the Eastside properties produce varietals such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The majority of vineyards have been producing fruit since 1998, and a small percentage of it has been finding its way into wine made by Quinn and Nichols ever since.

“We both love to make wine, and have made our own backyard’ wine for some time,” said Nichols. For […]

Pear Valley was established in 1997, and today, Tom and Kathleen share a mission to create delightful regional wines while conducting sustainable farming practices with a no-waste philosophy in mind.

Rhone wines are all the rage, but it wasn’t the thought of catching a trend that prompted Pipestone Vineyards owners Jeff Pipes and Florence Wong to plant their vineyards to Rhones. The main reason the couple dedicated themselves to those varietals was because they “love Southern French wines and the way that these wines go with the Mediterranean and Asian flavors in the food we eat. Food and family are an important part of our lives, so growing wines to compliment our own cooking seemed the obvious choice.”

Among the wines produced by the fledgling Pipestone Vineyards label are a Northern Rhone style Syrah and Reserve Syrah, a dry Grenache Noir Rose, Viognier, and a Southern Rhone style Grenache-based blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre which is called Melange. Jeff is also producing vineyard designate Zinfandels from quality local growers. Look for the first one to be released next year from Sauret grapes.

“Our production is about 80 percent red,” said Jeff, “and our winemaking philosophy is very traditional. We try to let the wine take care of itself without our intervention. We truly believe that the wine is made in the vineyard. Because we are such a small production winery – what the French are now celebrating […]

Tablas Creek Vineyard is the result of a 30-year friendship between Robert Haas, Jean-Pierre Perrin and Francois Perrin. If these names sound familiar, they should. For almost 30 years, Haas has been introducing fine European wines to the rest of the country through his importing company Vineyard Brands, and also bringing some of the leading California wineries to the national stage, including Kistler, Phelps, Sonoma Cutrer, Chappellet, and Hanzell. One of the French producers he introduced to the American market was Chateau de Beaucastel, owned by the Perrin family. The Perrins have been cultivating vineyards in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape region of the southern Rhone since the 19th century, and their 20th century contributions to the world of wine include Chau de Beaucastel, Domaines Perrin and La Vieille Ferme.

The notion of a California vineyard venture began as early as the mid-1970s, but Haas and the Perrins had little time to devote to such a project until 1987. At that time, they started an extensive search throughout the state for vineyard land that would closely approximate the climate and soils of the southern Rhone Valley: limestone soils, a favorable climate, and rugged terrain. In 1989, after a two-year search, the partnership bought a 120-acre […]

Built from the ground up on the site of an old stagecoach stop, it might seem more natural to stroll into the old-western-style saloon, place your booted foot upon the brass rail of the bar, and order a shot of whiskey from the bartender. But in the Tobin James tasting room, outstanding wines are poured from behind the grand, antique 1860’s Brunswick mahogany bar from Blue Eye, Missouri.

Tobin “Toby” James was born in San Francisco and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Toby knew from the time he was 18 years old that he wanted to make wine. He also knew that he wanted to have fun with it, which is why Toby says, “The notorious James Gang rebels and rowdies well-deserving of their reputation are alive and well and doing business at Tobin James Cellars.”

Toby was working in his brother’s wine shop in Cincinnati when Gary Eberle walked in to promote the Estrella River label. Before Gary left, Toby had secured himself an invitation to apprentice at Estrella River Winery. Shortly thereafter, Toby headed west and began working at the winery. Villicana Winery is home to RE:FIND Distillery  Paso Robles’ first craft distillery (Vodka, Gin).  Stop by for tours and tasting.

Villicana winery was created as the result of a culinary school pursuit. After college, Alex Villicana decided to pursue his love of food and wine and enrolled in a culinary program in Los Angeles. When the school failed to open, he turned his attention to winemaking and accepted a job working the 1990 grape harvest in Paso Robles. Captivated by this craft, and eager for more knowledge, Alex began taking viticulture and enology courses. He made his first commercial wine, a 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon, three years later.

In 1996, still enamored by the winemaking process, Alex and his wife Monica purchased 72 acres on the west side of Paso Robles, and with the collaboration of family and friends planted their 13 acre vineyard. Keeping their day jobs in Southern California, they commuted each weekend to Paso Robles to farm their vineyard. Eventually the trip would include a stop in Santa Maria where they made their small lot, craft wines at a cooperative crush facility.

By 2000, Alex & Monica were ready to break ground on their own winery in the Adelaida Hills. Two years later, the years of commuting and working two jobs finally paid off when the couple moved their young family to Paso Robles to work the winery and vineyard full-time. Since April 2002 Alex and Monica have placed their sole focus on this venture, and most often work the tasting bar in their quaint tasting room.

It took a lot of mileage on their car, and a big leap of faith to pursue this […]

From childhood friends in the backstreets of Liverpool to producing the huge US prime time hit, American Idol, Ken and Nigel are a phenomenal success story. Nigel is currently executive producer and “judge” on FOX Broadcasting’s summer hit So You Think You Can Dance, and Ken is executive producer of the head to head ratings rival, NBC’s America’s Got Talent and they are both enjoying the rewards and Hollywood lifestyle that come with a string of prime-time US network hits. Originally the purchase of the vineyard was planned as a consortium of buyers including Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller, one by one the investors pulled out leaving Nigel and Ken to purchase the beautiful 168 acre vineyard in Paso Robles, California alone.

Problems arose from the outset. Arriving at the vineyard dressed in designer clothing, Lythgoe and Warwick try to convince the jeans-clad owner of their interest in horticulture. From there the hilarities and struggles persist; business collaborations go south; wild boars cause chaos; potential profits dive; and vines become infested with rot. In 2007 the vineyard went into full transformation. Ken and Nigel hired Tony Domingos, a local vineyard consultant in the area. Blocks of the older vineyard are being replaced by new rootstock and slowly but surely the vineyard is being revitalized.

In May of 2008 the first Estate grown bottling was made. We have released five wines under the Villa San-Juliette Label. The wines have been very well received and are currently being poured and sold at various restaurants and wine shops across the state.

While things have been crazy Nigel and Ken refuse […]

We craft wines that represent a stylistic bridge between the Old and New worlds, capturing the finesse associated with European wines while celebrating the bold natural flavors of our estate vineyards in Paso Robles. Here, owner proprietor Hans Nef and managing partner Hans-R. Michel bring their Swiss heritage to California’s Central Coast, where they aim to unite the best of both experiences.

We specialize in varieties that excel in the complex soils and nuanced microclimates of Paso Robles, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and others. We also embrace unconventional blends as an opportunity to create wines of distinctive quality and character.

Our winemaking approach emphasizes structure and balance, harnessing our rich Paso Robles fruit with grace and food friendliness. The resulting wines exhibit ripe flavors with polished tannins and fresh natural acidity.

The Vina Robles story begins in 1997, when the Nef family planted the first of what would become four estate vineyards in Paso Robles—Jardine, Pleasant Valley, Creston Valley and Huerhuero. Today, the cornerstone of our estate program is Huerhuero Vineyard, where the rolling oak-studded hills reach an elevation of 1,030 feet. This site boasts multidimensional growing conditions that enable us to optimize the ripening of each varietal.

A fifth vineyard, Adelaida Springs Ranch, was recently added. Here, in the rugged coastal mountains at an elevation of 1,700 feet, 12 miles from the Pacific, we grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot for our award-winning Suendero blend and other Cuvée Collection wines.

Our wines are available across the United States and overseas, and can be enjoyed at our hospitality center in the heart of the Paso Robles […]

Vines on the Marycrest is the name behind Rhone blends such as “Heart of Glass”,”‘Round Midnight”, “Satin Doll” and their multiple Gold Medal winning Zinfandel blend, “My Generation”. Varietal releases include Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre, Zinfandel from the Remo Belli Vineyard, and ultra small lots of Barbera, Tempranillo, Grenache and Late Harvest Syrah dessert wine. In 2004 Jennifer and Victor Abascal came to Paso Robles to realize the dream of owning a vineyard and winery. The project began with tending to Zinfandel vines planted in the 1960s by Richard Sauret and then slowly converting the 26-acre almond orchard to vineyards. Carlotta’s Vineyard is a 3.5-acre field blend which will soon be blended into “Spanish Bombs.” The next vines planted were Zinfandel and went into Buck’s Bit to expand and increase the number of Zin vines. Carter’s Crest, a steep west facing slope is planted to Grenache, Mourvedre, Counoise and Cinsault. We hope you will join us in the tasting room, a modern design by renowned architect Vitus Matare. Come experience our artful handmade wines, modern architecture, and the rustic hills that define VOTM. Located off Nacimiento Lake Drive about 3.5 miles out of town at 5076 Mustard Creek Road across the street from Chronic Cellars. Vines on the Marycrest is testament to the force behind Victor Abascal who several years ago planted his first vines atop the Culver Crest at Marycrest Manor. Come taste the wines!
