Randy joined VPS in 2013 and acquired the company in May of 2017. Prior to moving his family to Templeton, Randy lived in Napa for 10 years. He most recently was a Vineyard Manager at Beckstoffer Vineyards, where the ranches under his control included To Kalon, Dr. Crane, Las Piedras and many others. Prior to Beckstoffer, Randy was the Director of Vineyard Operations for Saintsbury Winery in Carneros. Randy graduated from Cal Poly with a minor in Viticulture, and spent time at the University of Adelaide in Australia working on a Masters' of Viticulture. He holds several certificates in Winery Business management from Sonoma State and UC Davis, as well as being an Accredited Farm Manager through the ASFMRA. Locally, Randy is involved with several work groups focused on the stewardship of natural resources, including serving on the Board of the Upper Salinas - Las Tablas RCD. Most recently, Randy received the prestigious Winegrape Grower of the Year Award at the 2018 California Mid State Fair.

Vineyard Professional Services manages vineyards in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties, with operations centered in and around Paso Robles. As a full-service company, VPS handles all facets of a vineyard's life (acquistion and development to removal) and annual operating needs (planting to picking). In addition to being a licensed Farm Labor Contractor, VPS has an extensive inventory of modern equipment, including precision viticulture monitoring systems, high efficiency sprayers, and grape harvesters with sorting capability.

Unique to a large vineyard management company, all VPS managers have college degrees and experience farming inside and outside of San Luis Obispo county. Each manager is supported by several field foremen and assistant vineyard managers and further aided by a Viticulture Logistics Manager. The structure at VPS emphasizes a team approach to client satisfaction, with honesty, integrity and transparency maintained throughout all operations. As evidenced with the number of post-graduate degrees and accreditations, VPS personnel take professional pride in farming to meet each client's need and are committed to viticultural excellence.

VPS also provides clients with high level administrative and accounting support. The accounting and budget systems keep clients informed of the economic transactions on a monthly basis with a monthly and year-to-date comparison to their annual budgets. The communication and budget reporting needs are tailored to each client and strict internal controls maintain fiscal responsibility and transparency for each client account.

Having developed vineyards throughout the state, the team at VPS also brings a wide range of design and construction ideas to each project. Best management practices are adhered to and readily revised when new practices prove to be valuable. The topography and soil diversity of Paso Robles present unique challenges in vineyard layout. In addition to review by both their Soil Scientist and Certified Crop Advisor, VPS utilizes a number of mapping technologies and sampling to accurately shape vineyard blocks.

Recent innovations and trends in soil investigation and preparation were adopted and promoted early-on by VPS, resulting in healthier vines and faster returns on investment. Precision ripping and pre-plant fertilizer incorporation by California Agricultural Soilworks are based on GIS maps and give vineyard roots optimal tilth and nutrition during the key formative years.

Nursery-stock and type also differentiate VPS developments and vineyards. Simply choosing Certified stock does not guarantee clean wood for planting. In 2014 John Crossland wrote an open letter to the State of California’s Department of Food and Agriculture demanding certification standards and nursery protocol be revised. Through these efforts and greater testing capabilities, nurseries are now providing cleaner stock to growers. However, VPS still conducts their own testing and selective culling to best source clean wood.
