Hug Cellars specializes in hand crafting small lots of ultra-premium wine. Winemaker Augie Hug approaches winemaking with a measured hand, allowing each vineyard to express its own virtues. Hug Cellars utilizes grapes from premier, maritime vineyard sources from the Central Coast.
Hug Cellars is a small family owned winery established in 1994 by Augie and Raquel Hug. While becoming a reality in 1994, Hug Cellars started conceptually during the mid 1980’s, while Augie was the chef/owner of a small restaurant located in Northern California. Augie found that the union of food and wine came quite naturally to him, and it was during this time that he developed his love of wines.
A few years later, Raquel and Augie were proprietors of the Central Coast Wine Room, a wine shop and tasting room in Harmony, CA, on the Central Coast of California. It was there, that they were befriended by a couple of visionaries, Mat Garretson, founder of the Viognier Guild, and John Alban, of Alban Vineyards. Soon after their meeting, Mat and John founded the Hospice du Rhone; the largest wine event in the world for fans of Rhone variety wines.
Augie and Raquel became familiar with the wines made on the Central Coast from these (at the time) obscure grape varieties originating from the Rhone Valley, and showcased them in their wine shop and tasting room. Soon the Central Coast Wine Room was well known throughout the country as having an extensive array of impossible to find wines made on the Central Coast from Rhone varieties.
In 1994 under the gracious guidance and mentoring of John Alban, Augie produced 87 cases of “Edna Valley” Syrah at Alban Vineyards, their first commercial release. Meanwhile, Augie continued his quest for knowledge by involving himself in the hands-on experience of making their own wine and participating in winemaking extension courses at the University of California at Davis.
In 2000, Augie and Raquel decided to leave the retail side of the wine business and focus solely on Hug Cellars. While doing so, Hug Cellars began searching for unique vineyard sites and passionate growers. Augie & Raquel feel that grapes grown on the Central Coast produce balanced wines with a complex array of flavors while maintaining a firm structure enhanced by robust levels of natural acids. Wines that are not only great with food, but also wines that benefit from time in the cellar.
Hug Cellars works with some of the best vineyards and growers on the Central Coast. James Ontiveros of Rancho Ontiveros, Eric Jensen of Booker Vineyard, Terry Hoage of Terry Hoage Vineyard, Lino Bozzano of Laetitia and Cedar Lane Vineyard, just to name a few. Hug Cellar’s wines are wines that are truly “made in the vineyard”. Handcrafted cultivation by these dedicated growers, and gentle winemaking in the cellar, produce wines that are rich and intense in their aromas, textures and flavors. There is very little manipulation in the small lot winemaking at Hug Cellars. We utilize whole cluster and indigenous yeasts in our fermentations. This fosters wines that reflect the pure expression of these unique vineyards.
