The Peachy Canyon label began in 1988 with a load of Zinfandel grapes from Benito Dusi’s vineyards. Though only amounting to a couple hundred cases, that first release cemented the label’s reputation for premium wines, especially red wines such as Zinfandel, which remains Peachy Canyon’s flagship.
Initially, Peachy Canyon wines were produced in the small winery adjacent to the Becketts’ family home on Peachy Canyon Road (where our name was born) on the Westside of Paso Robles, a facility that could easily handle the 500 cases the family produced in 1990. However, demand for the label’s wines quickly outgrew the original winery capacity, so in 1999, the Becketts purchased a 20-year-old winery on Nacimiento Lake Road. Also in 1999, the Becketts also moved their tasting room to the historic 1886 Old Bethel School House located in the heart of Paso Robles’ wine country on scenic Highway 46 West. This quaint landmark attraction is surrounded by the “Old School House” estate vineyards, native oak trees, a welcoming picnic area, and quiet gazebo.
Now, some 20 years after the first release of Peachy Canyon wines, the label produces some 64,000 cases annually, and the winery remains a family affair. Vintners Doug and Nancy Beckett, are at the helm. Over the years their sons have held numerous positions within the business. The Becketts’ own 50 acres of Zinfandel, 35 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, 5 acres of Petite Sirah at different locations, plus 13 acres of miscellaneous grapes.
The Peachy Canyon philosophy has also remained true to its roots – that great wine begins in the vineyards. The label’s nearly 100 acres of estate vineyards are the Mustang Springs Ranch, Old School House, Snow, and Mustard Creek. The estate-grown varieties include Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Petite Sirah. Grapes to round out the label’s other wines — Merlot, Viognier and Sangiovese — are obtained through long-standing contracts with several premium winegrape growers.
In the cellar, Winemaker Terry Culton focuses on bringing maximum flavor and balance to his hand crafted wines. Reflecting the family’s belief in the local terroir, many of the wines have vineyard designate labels, and all of them exhibit the bold varietal characteristics that each different vineyard location has to offer. The fruit is evident in each vintage, and by releasing Peachy Canyon wines at the “peak of their youth,” the Becketts feel they give the consumer the opportunity to enjoy a young wine at its most vibrant state or hold on to it for several years for a more mellow style.
Inside our tasting room, you’ll find a warm fireplace, many fine gifts, a fridge filled with lunch goodies, and, of course, the award-winning wines of Peachy Canyon Winery.
